Are people using SSL on their websites?

I know that sites that exclusively use paypal for payment, that it is not needed, but was thinking about the number of customers that leave as soon as they see no padlock on the website.

If anyone is using SSL, can they suggest the best way to go about adding this to my website and what is a reasonable PA price to pay.

Thanks Thumbs Up Yes
Kevin uses it, if you PM him he probably has all the answers you could want:

Hi sorry just noticed this post Confused
Yes as Geoff says I use ssl on all my shopping cart sites, easy to do just generate a csr key using cpanel (click on ssl/tls)
then buy the ssl cert from godaddy (around £30 for 2 years)they will then email you the key. You will then need to contact your hosting provider (hostgator in my case) as you will need a dedicated IP address ($24/year) and they charge you a one off fee of $10 for installation. Once they confirm this has been done just change the "false" to "true" on both cofig files on zen. You will need ssl if like me you use googlecheckout as a payment method.

Any other questions give me a shout.

i would say its wise to have ssl - even if its shared ssl - on any site that performs transactions. Yes the paypal is done off-site but the customers personal details, and details of the transaction are stored within your site so this needs protection.

Many thanks Beany.

I think I will need to look at doing this SSL on my website.
I was just a little hesitant as i heard of problems where after this was setup they started to get lots of security error messages jumping up on the websites. I think this was with a shared, but not with a dedicated IP.

You do get the message "do you want to display the secured and unsecured content" sometimes as this is to do with images on the site that are not secured, but like you say the main problems are when you use a shared ssl, would recommend dedicated for the price as I've had customers in the early days not want to leave any details and simply move on to a site with ssl. I get more sales now through googlecheckout than I do with paypal due to the fact people don't need to register with my site as google api does it all for you but like I mentioned before you need dedicated ssl for googlecheckout.

the messages popping up can be because the secure website addy doesnt match the normal one i.e. http://www.mycharms.co.uk and a ssl addy of http://www.hostgator.com/~mine/login.php or similar. Obviously a dedicated ssl is the best option but on a starter site when there are limitations on what you can spend it can be hard to justify the cost - personally i find it more sensible to manage with a shared for a while (that is of course as long as your hosting service provides this service)

Yep. I am on Hostgator. They do both. It was the cost of the dedicated IP that was the problem. I do most my sales through my eBay powerseller account. I only really sell 1 or 2 items a week on my fitness site (although it is slowly increasing as my goggle rank is slowly moving up). The dedicated IP is a lot for so small sales. Yet on the other hand, I wonder how many customers I am losing due to my website not having the padlock on it.

i think if you have the hostgator shared ssl addy in your config then it shouldnt throw up a message - the only clue will be the url will change - and most dont spot that. Considering the shared ssl is free with hostgator a trial run with it wouldnt do any harm
